Some research published in The Lancet and reported by the BBC on their website suggests that Crohns Disease is not typified by an over-active immune system. Rather it is typified by an innate defective immune response.
Immuno-suppressants may damp down symptoms but actually accentuate the underlying immuno-deficiency.
The researchers believe that, because Crohn's patients have weakened immune systems, they are unable to destroy bacteria that penetrate the intestinal wall. The bacteria are therefore left to build up in the tissue, stimulating the secretion of inflammatory chemicals that give rise to the symptoms of Crohn's Disease.

This is not IBD news as such but may give you some idea of how well I am feeling. I recently did a 15 mile walk for charity. I completed it non-stop in less than four hours, suffering no ill effects in the process! Not bad for a 59 year old and testimony, I think, to the measures I have taken to improve my health and fitness.
